Educational research across disciplines and beyond borders
We live in an era of profound and accelerating transformation. The challenges confronting humanity, such as deepening global inequalities, ecological crises, the displacement of peoples, the erosion of social cohesion, and the exclusion of specific communities from meaningful participation in educational processes, cannot be adequately addressed by any single discipline, institution, or sector alone.
Education, in all its forms, lies at the heart of these challenges and their potential resolution. Whether in general schooling, higher education, vocational training, or adult and continuing education, the purposes and practices of learning are deeply contested and consequential. Education can reproduce unjust structures, or it can transform them. It can marginalise, or it can emancipate. It can fragment knowledge into isolated silos, or it can cultivate the integrative, reflexive, and collaborative capacities that our shared futures demand.
Transdisciplinary education research emerges from the conviction that understanding and improving education, as a field of research, a profession, and a social mission, requires crossing boundaries: between academic disciplines, theory and practice, policy and intervention; universities and communities; across epistemological spaces, geographic locations, and generations of learners and educators. It is grounded in the foundational virtues of transdisciplinary inquiry, rigour, openness, and tolerance, and oriented towards knowledge that is co-created, contextualised, and applied in the service of social transformation.
In this context, CenTRE understands education as a lifelong, dynamic, socially situated, and embodied process. It examines issues related to globalisation, migration, and social justice across the lifespan, with attention to the diverse contexts in which these issues arise.
CenTRE aspires to create a space in which educators, scholars, practitioners, policymakers, civil society actors, and learners come together across disciplinary, institutional, and geographic boundaries to co-create and share knowledge and practices that matter.
Through its activities, CenTRE envisions to contribute to educational systems shaped by, and held accountable to, the principles of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Social Justice (IDEAS). It also envisions an international community of transdisciplinary inquiry in which rigour, relevance, academic freedom, social responsibility, local knowledge, and global perspectives are held together in productive and ethical tension.
Pluriversality
We recognize that there are diverse, equally valid ways of being and forms of knowledge. We value the insights emerging from lived experience, communities, professional practice, Indigenous and local traditions, and academic inquiry.
Transdisciplinarity
We pursue research based on rigour, openness, and tolerance. We are open to new, unexpected, and even contradictory insights, as well as to different forms of knowledge and experience.
Ethics of Care
We cultivate respectful, reciprocal, and accountable relationships with all those involved in our work, recognising their knowledge, dignity, needs, and agency.
Board of Advisors
She examines key issues in education and globalisation, such as the internationalisation of higher education, labour migration and education policy, and inclusion and diversity in higher education through the social justice lens.
His research examines the cultural politics of difference in education with a focus on race, class, gender, and sexuality from historical, intersectional, and transnational frameworks.
His research and teaching activities focus on democracy in its different dimensions, from citizenship education and the prevention of anti-democratic tendencies over democratic theory to democratic innovation.
She has worked for various Austrian schools for 26 years. As the school's head of the English department and the school librarian, her main focus is on the promotion of reading literature among students.
